Lost during aerial attack during Falklands Conflict in 1982.
On 21/05/1982 when in Falkland Sound and bombarding the Argentine airstrip at Goose Green she came under aerial attack by at least three waves of Argentine aircraft destroying the hangar area.
Under her own power but defenceless she headed for San Carlos Water but was attacked again some bombs exploding on the ship and others nearby. Some others did not explode but did penetrate the ship. She stopped in Grantham Sound fires at the stern out of control. Her Captain decided to abandon the ship. HMS Yarmouth took off survivors who were transferred to P&O's Canberra.Ardent continued to burn throughout the night sinking in the early hours of 22/05/1982. 22 members of her crew lost their lives.
